What do ravens eat?

Just about everything. They are considered omnivores. And they will do their darnedest to enter any food box you may think is secure while out camping, they being incredibly smart. But given their druthers, I would imagine a banquet of ready-made meat is preferred.

Such was the situation last week while we were in California. Friday we took a boat out to Santa Cruz Island in the Channel Islands chain and part of the National Park system. A wonderful trip should you get to Southern California in the future.

California sea lions are numerous in the area.

When the large marine mammals die for whatever reason, the ravens are there to start the recycling of biomass. This raven acted quite confident even as I approached to a distance not normally tolerated on the mainland:
